Developing plantar fasciitis from running

I ran track and cross-country during high school and continued to run to keep fit during college. After graduating, I had a ton of student loans and an entry level job that didn’t pay all that much. I struggled to keep up with my bills and certainly didn’t have the money to afford a gym membership. Since running is free, it was the perfect way to stay in good shape. I ran six days a week, often going for eight to ten miles. I steadily increased speed and distance. Unfortunately, I’d bought myself the cheapest pair of running shoes I could find. They failed to provide proper support and stability for my feet. With so much running, I developed plantar fasciitis. At the time, I didn’t know what was wrong with my feet. It felt like my arches, from toe to heel, were tearing with my every step. The pain frequently woke me up in the middle of the night. Although I regularly iced my feet, just walking was agonizing. There was no way I could run. I finally went to see a podiatrists who explained that the amount of running I’d done in cheap shoes had caused the condition. Fortunately, I was able to heal my feet by taking better care of them. I needed to quit running for a while, take a daily dose of Ibuprofen, keep up with the ice and incorporate some stretches into my daily routine. I also invested in a much better pair of sneakers, specifically designed for long-distance running. I replace my sneakers every year and now change up my workouts a bit. I’ve added cycling, swimming, weight lifting and all sorts of different exercises that lessen impact on my feet.
