Getting outside for my workouts

When my husband and I moved further south, I was able to completely change up my workout routine.

Living in the northeastern part of the country, I was always dealing with inclement weather.

Between the rain, snow, cold, heat and humidity, there was rarely an opportunity to workout outside. Since we were over 50 miles from the nearest fitness center, I was forced to figure out exercises I could do at home. I bought a treadmill, some free weights and a yoga mat and did what I could. I workout everyday, and it got a little repetitive. Now that I have beautiful weather nearly every day, I’m able to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and scenery. I’m also fortunate to have a really great bike path very close to the house. I typically get up in the morning, get on my bike and ride the path for twenty minutes to reach a soccer field. At the soccer field, I have access to a long length of smooth pavement where I spend about forty minutes running, doing lunges, squats and jumps. I bring along a towel to spread on the ground and I add in a series of abdominal crunches and pushups. I then take the time for a deep stretch before riding my bike back home. It’s a fairly lengthy workout but I really enjoy it. I get to work different muscle groups by mixing things up. I enjoy riding my bike and appreciate the various trees, flowers and even turtles I see along the path. I always get my heart rate up, get sweaty and feel exhausted by then end of it.
