Cleaning out air ducts isn’t usually necessary

I’m a professional HVAC technician, and a lot of times we get called out to customers’ homes to do ventilation duct cleanings.

I don’t know that it always helps, and I don’t usually instruct people to do it on a regular basis.

However, once in a while it doesn’t hurt. See, an HVAC system runs on a closed circuit and so it’s not like the interior of your ventilation ducts are exposed to the elements or anything. They aren’t constantly getting pelted with dust or dirt or water or anything like that. So in other words, the inside of your ventilation system is probably much cleaner than you might think it is. However, if you do something like remodeling where you’re going to get a lot of sawdust or sheetrock dust sucked into your HVAC system, that’s a time when you might want to have your air ducts professionally cleaned. Another example of a good time to clean your air ducts would be if you start to smell a strange smell whenever your heating or air conditioning system turns on. If strange smells start coming from your heating and A/C vents, that might mean that you have mold or mildew growing on the interior of your ductwork. That’s when you definitely want to have a professional HVAC technician check out your ductwork for you. Usually, though, it’s not something that you need to worry about. I would take that into consideration if you’re ever thinking about having your HVAC system professionally cleaned. Most of the time, it’s just not necessary.
