My handyman has his limits

My handyman, Gus, can do basically anything around the house.

He can fix leaks and clogged toilets.

He can un-stop drains, change lightbulbs, and fix broken windows. He can paint, clean, or fix just about anything that’s broken, but I guess even a really good handyman like Gus has his limits. Even though Gus takes care of the routine maintenance for our HVAC system, like changing the air filters, he isn’t exactly a trained HVAC technician. When our electric furnace tore up a few weeks ago, we immediately called Gus because that’s just what we always do when something tears up at our house. He came over and looked at the furnace for a few minutes, but he quickly realized that this particular furnace repair was out of his depth. He told us that he didn’t really even want to try to fix the furnace because he wasn’t a qualified or certified HVAC technician. He said that if he started messing around with the electric furnace, it might end up voiding the warranty, and that was the last thing that we wanted to do. I guess it was a good call on his part, too, because when we called the HVAC company and made an appointment, they assured us that if there was evidence of someone messing around with the heating unit, the warranty would no longer apply. Thank goodness Gus was smart enough to know his limits as far as HVAC systems go! I guess we will keep using Gus for all of the other things that we need help with around the house, but for major HVAC repairs we will call the professionals.
