Unusual house call request

I work as a dispatch person for a local HVAC repair shop and I think I have heard it all.

Whether it is critters in the ductwork or little Johnny just poured syrup down the air vent you would not believe the types of items people call about.

The other day I got a call from a frantic mom that said her daughter had taken the cover off the floor vent to make a little house for their new kitten. I knew immediately what was going to follow. The kitten, being curious as they are, had decided to take a walk in the ductwork. It is summer so I knew that the furnace was off but I also knew that this could spell trouble for both the kitten and the HVAC system. Thankfully this customer did not have central air so the system was shut down completely. My first piece of advice was to try and coax the kitten out with treats and I told them that we would send someone out if that didn’t work. An hour later she called back and said that they hadn’t had any luck. She thought that she heard the kitten somewhere in the lines in the basement. Her daughter was crying loudly in the background so I told her I could have a technician out in just over an hour. The guy I sent said he felt like a hero when he got back to the office because when he opened up the lines and the little girl saw her kitten she gave him a huge hug. These kinds of calls can be interesting and at least this one had a happy ending. I don’t think that the little girl will ever open up the floor vents again that is for sure.
