During my last HVAC maintenance appointment, the HVAC professional pointed out something that I’d never recognized before.
While he was walking through my home, he noticed that all the air vents were covered in dust. I will admit, I noticed that there was dust on the air vent covers and I had been meaning to clean them. However, life had been so chaotic that I’d never gotten around to cleaning them. I was really embarrassed when the HVAC professional called me out on the mess. However, when he pointed out the dust, he wasn’t making a reference to my cleaning skills. The HVAC professional was saying that the dust buildup was a small problem caused by a much bigger problem within. According to the HVAC professional, dusty air vents were a sign of ductwork leaks. If there were leaks within the ductwork, the dust and debri would slip out and then buildup on the air vents. In order to repair the leaky ductwork, I needed to call a different HVAC professional who specialized in cleaning and repairing ductwork. I designated an entire day for this HVAC professional to fix the ductwork, and I’m glad I did! He spent the whole morning and afternoon climbing into the ductwork and finding the leaks. He washed out the ducts and repaired the holes with duct tape. I watched him carefully so I could learn what he was doing in case the issue came about again. When he was done, I could tell a difference in my air quality right away!
