Roof damage while out of town – energy bills!

I know that I can be a bit pessimistic and eager to catastrophize upcoming situations.

I don’t want to always be worried about mishaps headed my way… But I have had a difficult life that programmed my brain to be on the lookout. This is why I try very hard to preemptively circumvent any potential problems that could be headed my direction. Unfortunately, you can’t plan for everything. I realized this the hard way last year when I decided to go on vacation and returned home to a heating, cooling, and air quality control disaster. I finally decided that I should take a leap of faith and go on a nice holiday. Unfortunately, when I left my house I thought it was a good idea to keep the air conditioning running so that my indoor air quality would not suffer while I was gone. I did not want abundant heat and humidity seeping into the house and creating extra mold or mildew growth. This is why I turned the thermostat down, but left the air conditioning unit and dehumidification system running on an Eco setting. What could go wrong? Well, I did not foresee a massive storm blowing through our town and destroying my insulation while I was gone. In fact, part of the roof was ripped off of my house. Then, the heating, cooling, and air quality control system continued trying to manage my indoor air temperature according to my programmed eco settings. Well, eco settings don’t help your energy bill much when you’re trying to cool the entire neighborhood. I came home from vacation to a massive energy bill and structural damage to my home. Never planned for that one.
