There are a few nice upsides to being an old lady. People tend to hold doors open for me in public, which is nice. My AARP discount saves me money at a lot of different businesses. Also I am retired, and not going to a boring job for 40 hours a week is also very nice. On the other hand, my body is falling apart, which sucks. All of my joints seem to hurt all the time, and my arthritis gets worse with every passing year. A few weeks ago my heating system broke down. This hardly came as a surprise, because I have been using the same heater for the last 16 years, so it’s served me well for a very long time. I called a local HVAC contractor to find out what my options were. He said that the old heater was not worth repairing, because of the advanced age, and I needed to get something new. He told me about something I had never heard about, called radiant heated floors. This provides a constant, gentle heating that radiates up from hot water pipes beneath the floorboards. I am not pleased about how expensive it is to get radiant heated floors installed, but I have decided to get them anyway. I have another few years left, and I want to enjoy them! If that means paying a little more for heating, then so be it. As they say “you can’t take it with you.”
