Some of the DIY HVAC repairs you can do on your own

HVAC system repairs can be very costly, especially when you contract an HVAC professional.

  • There may be times when an expensive repair is unavoidable, but you can try troubleshooting your system first before proceeding to call a professional.

Some HVAC repairs you can easily do-it-yourself. If your HVAC system stops running or blows inadequate air, start by checking your circuit breaker. This is often a quick check that may end up saving you money. Circuit breakers may trip if you have multiple lights, appliances, and other equipment on the same breaker, causing your system to stop working. Examine your thermostat for inaccurate settings or dead batteries. If your system is battery-operated, it may be requiring new batteries. Ensure you set your thermostat to a temperature below your room temperature. Also, ensure your unit is not turned off or set to blow fan. Change your air filters to ensure proper airflow. Dirty or clogged filters impede airflow, which in turn causes your system to be inefficient. Clogged filters can also result in your system icing up. You may also need to melt any ice on your system. Melting the ice is a simple process that can be done as a DIY project. Turn off your system and run only the fan to help you melt the ice quickly. If you are not in a rush to use your unit, you can turn it off and let it melt on its own. Examine your ducts, too, to ensure air is coming out of them. They may need to be cleaned if they are dirty enough to impede airflow.
