Electrical Damage to Your A/C System

Tropical storms, thunderstorms, and hurricanes can take down power lines and even damage your electrical equipment such as your air conditioner. This time of the year especially can be a dangerous time for your A/C system. During a storm, a lightning strike can cause a power surge that trips a breaker. In this case, turn the A/C system off at the thermostat and go to your electrical panel and find the breaker for the air conditioner. Turn it off and then back on to reset the external circuit breaker. Wait 30 minutes and make sure the thermostat remains off so that your A/C system’s internal breaker can reset. After 30 minutes, turn the thermostat back to COOL. Most likely, your air conditioner will come back on but if it doesn’t, then this could mean you have electrical damage. In this case, if one or more of your external circuits wont come back on, then you probably have electrical damage beyond just your air conditioner. You would need to call a licensed electrician to repair the damage. Electrical damage could be caused by neglected maintenance as well. When preventative maintenance is not performed, your unit may have decreased air flow due to contaminants. The air filter and coils get clogged and cause your unit to have to work harder and longer. Eventually, the evaporator coil can freeze and cause the circuit to trip and can cause damaging water leaks. If electrical damage isn’t caused by lack of maintenance, it could mean something needs repaired such as a fan motor or a compressor or you could have a refrigerant leak.
