Tightening up the house for HVAC savings

Though super efficient, I still had to do my part to maximize that HVAC efficiency.

The summer is so hot where I live. It’s probably just a balance for how the rest of the year is just awesome weather-wise. However, the heat in the summer can be downright brutal to endure. There really is not a good way to manage that kind of heat without reliable HVAC cooling. By far, this region overwhelmingly chooses the HVAC heat pump to deliver that much needed cooling. There are the odd folks who still employ an evaporative cooler called a swamp cooler. But, that is a really tough way to manage this kind of heat. No, the HVAC heat pump is the vastly more preferred method and it does a really nice job as well. But, it does come at a price. The days of just allowing the heat pump to run non stop are over. Today, our utility costs are a significant chunk of the household budget. So, it now requires homeowners to pay attention to the amount of kilowatt hours being sucked up by the heat pump in the summer. I know that I had to get very proactive in an attempt to curb the spending on utilities. I am fortunate to have a really good HVAC but, that wasn’t enough. Though super efficient, I still had to do my part to maximize that HVAC efficiency. First, I really sealed up my house super tight. Every year, I go over every inch of my home in an attempt to find any and all gaps that would allow HVAC treated air to escape. That also meant having my ductwork resealed because that is a huge area of HVAC leaks. The tighter the home the less the HVAC runs.
