How to troubleshoot an air handler

For improper wiring, check the incoming voltage and make sure your motor is wired to the proper specification

When warm or cool air is not being distributed through your home, it could indicate an issue with your air handler. A faulty air handler can cause significant comfort and energy efficiency issues for your home. The most common air handler problem is the lack of air movement. When there is no air circulating through your unit, the most common cause is often a broken belt. When troubleshooting this issue, verify that the fan pulley and motor pulley are in good working condition. It is also crucial to align the pulleys to avoid premature failure of the belt, fan pulley, or motor pulley. If the belt is in the proper position but your fan is still not running, start troubleshooting backward on your electrical circuit. Check your incoming power to ensure the overload reset is not tripped. Once you confirm that your motor is receiving power, you may proceed with troubleshooting your motor. There are multiple reasons why your motor would fail. Improper voltage to your motor can result from power being outside the motor’s operating range, based on the manufacturer’s specification. For improper wiring, check the incoming voltage and make sure your motor is wired to the proper specification. Verify that there are no faulty splices on the electrical wiring from the incoming electrical circuit breaker to your magnetic starter and motor. Check the rotation of the fan to ensure it is getting proper air distribution. When the fan’s motor runs backward, you will get some pressure in your air handler, but you won’t achieve the full force of your air handler.
