It was the most devastating thing when my brother decided to move into a rundown rental house.
The house was in a very shady area and to be honest, we didn’t feel all that comfortable visiting.
I felt bad that I didn’t visit my brother more often when he was living there, because this is where he died. Of course, if I did visit more often, I might have become just as sick. You see, his HVAC system was having severe issues, including a crack in the heat exchanger. If you know how the heat exchanger on an HVAC works, you’ll know that it keeps the dangerous carbon monoxide from getting into your breathing air. If the heat exchanger is cracked, the dangerous gas will seep right into your home and it’s a silent killer. My brother didn’t realize there was anything wrong. He just started to become really tired all of the time. I would talk to him on the phone and before I knew it, he would no longer respond because he fell asleep. I went to check on him a few times towards the end because he was making me nervous. I told him he needed to go to a hospital but he insisted everything was fine. He said the air quality was just a little bad because he needed to change the air filter, but he said it was nothing serious. Nothing serious, he died within the week of saying that… Well since he passed, I sued the landlord who didn’t take care of the HVAC system and he is no longer a landlord!
