Don’t get me wrong: I have no problem with women being HVAC technicians. I don’t care if they become owners of HVAC companies. What upset me was that I had worked in the HVAC company for almost twenty years and I was their top HVAC technician. My boss had often talked about me purchasing the HVAC company when he retired. I couldn’t figure out why when he announced his retirement, he said his daughter was the new owner. I thought I was in line to be the new HVAC company owner. I couldn’t believe he chose his daughter over me. I was still upset when I got home. I was glad my wife was visiting her mother, because I may have taken my frustration out on her, and yelled. She would have walked out on me at the first sign of my raising my voice. I knew how she was. She would never fight with me but she would be the first one to discuss my frustrations with. By the time I got back to work the next day, I was ready to face the new HVAC company owner and be nice. Along with the rest of the HVAC technicians, I was sitting in the break room drinking coffee when she walked into the door. I just stared as she walked and brazenly kissed me in front of everyone. They weren’t supposed to know the new owner was my wife. All afternoon I was getting jabbed about being in cahoots with the owner. My embarrassment must have been quite noticeable because I also got a couple slaps on the back.
