I was looking into various careers at the unemployment office when something caught my attention. I work construction most of my life and I was looking for a change because I wanted something that was a year-round position instead of seasonal. There was a posting on the board for a new school that had opened up across town that specialize in training HVAC technicians. The school had a tuition assistance program which was great because I was currently laid off as it was winter time. The course completion time was about a year and I figured I could get much of it out of the way during my downtime and hopefully finish it in less than that. I contacted the school and signed up for the classes which started just a week away. About halfway through the winter I realized how lucrative a career as an HVAC technician could be and I was excited to start this new adventure. There were many opportunities for internships as well so I could get Hands-On training while still in school. I never realized before how specialized of a field this really was and how quickly the technology was changing from year to year. We had to learn about traditional systems and the new computerized programmable ones as well in order to find the best job possible when we finished school. One of my instructors was really great and directed me towards one of the newer companies in town because he knew that I really had an interest in installing and repairing the programmable units instead of the old-fashioned ones. I know that I will be happy in my new career choice and also in the fact that I can work a steady amount of hours year-round. Being an HVAC technician and be a demanding job but it also offers many opportunities that I am looking forward to.
