A couple of times, some of our customers even called to request a mail technician.
My grandfather worked in the coal mines until they closed in 1956. He didn’t know what to do when the mine closed. He only knew one job. Eventually, my grandfather opened a repair shop that specialized in heating equipment. My dad worked in the same line of business when I was growing up. I always thought it was interesting that our family was in the heating business. It seemed like a legacy since my grandfather and my father both worked in the industry. I always thought I would grow up and work in the heating business too. I never thought I would be teased and ridiculed because I was a girl. I always worked alongside my dad when he was working on heating and air conditioning repairs. He never told me that the job was only for men. Unfortunately, a lot of people in the industry have the opinion that this is not a job that is suitable for a woman. It’s taken a very long time to earn all of the respect that I deserve. During the first six months that I worked at the repair company, people mistook me for the receptionist all of the time. A couple of times, some of our customers even called to request a mail technician. When my dad stopped making exceptions, people started to realize that I was just as accomplished as any other professional in the industry. These days, I run the company and I have a handful of women that are employed. I don’t discriminate against anyone. As long as the repair tech works hard, there is always a place in my company for someone with skills.
