When my brother graduated from basic training, my mom and I decided to go see the celebration.
It was a 12-hour drive to the army base, but my mom and I took turns at the wheel.
We left as soon as work was finished on a Monday and we arrived very late at night. My mom and I didn’t have a lot of choices as far as hotels were concerned. We decided to stay at a modern Hotel with decent rooms and a continental breakfast. My mom and I got a room with two beds. The beds were extremely lumpy and they made a lot of noise every time I rolled around. The water in the shower was just above tepid. I wouldn’t dare say that the water was hot. At least the room was clean. The air conditioner wasn’t thrilling either. Every time the fan started moving air, my mom and I could smell the faint odor of bacon grease in the air. It was foul and disgusting, especially since both of us are vegetarians. I would have preferred to turn the air conditioner off all together, but my mom was having hot flashes. We had to put up with the awful stench coming from the air conditioner. My brother was very happy that we made the long drive and we spent all day with him and his friends. We had a nice dinner together and then my mom and I drove all the way home. We thought about sleeping at a rest area, but we certainly weren’t going to spend another night in that hotel.
