I really don’t know much at all about how to handle a winter.
That is not something that I have ever really had to do. My entire life, winter was welcomed because of the clear skies and gorgeous weather. Sure, the temps dropped to a point where the HVAC heat pump would kick on. That’s all it would take to kick the chill out of the house in the wee hours of the morning. My winter attire was adding a hoodie to the mix and wearing shoes more than I wore flip flops. Now, I am standing in winter boots nearly everyday of the winter. The HVAC furnace is cranking all the time trying to provide me with an abundance of heat. The house I’m in is a rental and it’s not all that. But, it’s what I could afford. Thankfully, I have a great neighbor who showed me the ropes when it comes to getting the most from my HVAC heating. The first month of winter, I was stunned by the utility bill. Granted, I was cranking the furnace to help me orient myself and stay warm. But what I didn’t realize was that much of the HVAC treated air was getting wasted. My neighbor really helped me out. Together, we were able to seal up the house and add some insulation. I even got the rental company to put a decent storm door on this house. That helped a lot too. I can already tell a difference. Things aren’t as cold to the touch. And that incessant draft is gone. I’m still a long way from being able to handle the winter, but it’s a start.
